Meet Your Instructor Jules Horne

Hello! I'm Jules Horne, writer and teacher. I first got started in writing thanks to a lovely primary school teacher, Mr Stables.

I didn't know any authors growing up. Books and writers had a kind of mystique. I didn't realise 'writer' was something you could actually be and do. But fast forward and that's how I've spent my life! Highlights include stories and plays broadcast on BBC Radio, stage plays, spoken word and fiction.

I've made a creative career out of writing, including 13 years' experience teaching wonderful Creative Writing students (undergraduate and MA) with The Open University.

So I'm here to share the #1 issue I've met throughout my writing and teaching journey.

Most aspiring authors learn by osmosis. Read loads of books, then write one.

Some writers I've worked with have written an entire novel draft before getting any feedback.

There seems to be an expectation that reading alone will teach you solid writing craft. But you don't learn to play an instrument by listening to music. You don't learn sports by watching TV. You learn by doing, and through close, focused, deliberate practice.

In my experience - and research has shown - this works for writing, too. You can improve your writing skills far more quickly and effectively through close-reading and practice.

Deliberate practice is a powerful tool for learning writing techniques - yet so few authors have discovered its impact. That's what inspired me to create this new online course.

It's a unique and highly affordable way for you to quickly develop your craft skills, whatever your genre, stage, or style.

It's a fast-track to wielding language more effectively for greater impact. It's also a perfect foundation if you're considering a college-level writing course, as the techniques will give you an extra edge and confidence before you start.

Of course, you want to know whether I can actually help you! Writing is personal, and you'll want to gel with your coach and tutor, and be sure they nurture distinctive voices and creativity. In that spirit, I've coached hundreds of students as a tutor with The Open University and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Several authors have gone on to get published and build successful careers in creative and commercial writing.

Note: this is a meaty, practical course of 10 modules, including short videos, creative assignments, quizzes and course certificate. Students can post their learning and reflections privately and I'll reply. This personal touch only applies to this pre-launch special, for up to a year after sign-up.

Frequently Asked Questions

What skill level is this course for?

All levels! Deliberate practice methods work for everyone - aspiring; experienced; indie authors; MA student writers, anyone interested in techniques and language. It works for any genre, and can easily be adapted to your needs and interests.

Do I need to learn grammar?

No. The course uses a few language terms already in most writers' toolkit, and everything is explained during the course.

How long do I have access to the course?

You have two years' access from sign-up, and can learn at your own pace.

Why the discount?

It's a pre-launch special offer for the first cohort, before wider release at the full price of £152.

Can't I learn all of this on YouTube?

YouTube is a tremendous resource, but it's hard to find the focused, effective learning points that will really help your writing quickly. This means you can waste a lot of time. This course focuses in on powerful techniques that you can use right away, gathered into one 10-module course.

Do I need writing experience before starting?

No. Deliberate practice writing (like music and sport) can meet you where you are. You can jump in and benefit from focused, craft-oriented practice at any stage. That said, the course will most benefit writers at a stage where they want to build stronger craft skills.

Should I invest in DELIBERATE PRACTICE FOR CREATIVE WRITERS before investing in an MA or MFA?

That's a great idea! College study is an exciting time that flies by in a woosh. In my experience, many students come to it without fundamentals in place, so spend a lot of time playing catch-up, and don't get best value from their investment. This course is an affordable way to cover key writing craft techniques and language concepts, and be ready to devote your precious MA/MFA time to your creative art.
